It was a quiet autumn afternoon when Coyote was
out in his yard grooming his bushes. He had always thought of himself as
somewhat of a horticulturist. Although many had thought that indeed Coyote was
a ruthless killer who only enjoyed the taste of meat, he actually enjoyed the
little pleasures in life such as his flowerbeds and gardening. Now today he
was out in his yard for a particular reason. His old time buddy Fox and himself had
always had a long rivalry about who was the best trickster.
Everyone
in town knew that the two were always game to make a joke at the their own expense. Although sometimes there was collateral damage and the townspeople would be indirectly affected by it, most of the time it was better than themselves having a trick played directly on themselves. This is perhaps the reason that everyone in town always egged on their
engagements. Maybe in this way they would be too busy with their own tricks on
each other that they would leave the others alone. Anyways, the night prior, Fox
had snuck into Coyote’s yard and trimmed his bushes into the shape of a Fox’s
face laughing with joy. So, Coyote was out fixing his plants and trying to come
up with his next plot against his old friend. This is when it happened.
The
moment that would change the trajectory of the trickster battle. Right then a
moving van showed up next to Coyote’s house. The house had been vacant for some
time because no one had ever wanted to stay that close to Coyote. First off, many
were scared that he might come and eat them, and secondly no one wanted to get
that close to the trickster war zone. Today, however, that all changed. Coyote
stood up amazed at the sight and walked over to greet his new neighbor. “Hello
there! You must be Coyote, my new neighbor. I’m Raven."
